A game engine is exactly that - the engine that drives the game. It's the point of contact between the software that was written by EA Sports developers and the hardware built by either Sony or Microsoft, in the case of the PS4 or Xbox One respectively.
And its make more and more realistic then before using that engine. From lighting, rendering and detail was much improved.
